About the Pencil Nebula -
The Pencil Nebula is the part of vast remnant of a star that exploded approximately 11,000 years ago, and whose debris is still spreading outward. Perhaps when we explore the nebula a thousand year from now, this picture, released by NASA on June 5, will be seen as historic, influential. The linear nebula was given is name in the 1840s by British astronomer sir John Herschel. He was a big fan of Talbot and Daguerre, by the way, and in an 1839 essay gave photography its name. He also coined the terms "negative," "positive" and even "snap-shot."
