About Challenger 1986

Having seen 24 space shuttle missions go forth and safely return, Americans were delighted when NASA invited high-school teacher Christa McAuliffe to fly on the next one. The New Hampshirite's, son, daughter and students were eagerly watching at Cape Canaveral on the morning of January 28. Delayed seven times, the Challenger finally launched at 11:38 a.m. Then, 73 seconds into its flight, the craft disintegrated and swirled into the ocean in a cloud of white vapor. Despite expansive TV coverage, this still photograph became emblematic of a tragedy that saddened so many, and changed their views of space, rekindling the debate about whether man even belonged up there.
